How Long Does Local SEO Take to Work? What to Expect and When

“How long will it take?” is usually the second question a small business owner asks us, right after “how much will it cost?”. It’s a fair question. You’re investing time and money, and you want to know when you’ll see something back.

The truthful answer is that it depends on what you’re trying to rank for, how much competition you face, and how much work goes in on both sides. This guide gives you the timescales we see with our own clients, and explains why some results come in days while others take a year.

The Short Answer

Most small businesses should expect to see some good results from local SEO within about three months, such as better Google Business Profile visibility and early ranking movement. Ranking for competitive service searches often takes three months or more. The strongest results usually come between six months and a year, once everything is bedded in and Google has a clear picture of your business.

A Typical Local SEO Timeline

This is the pattern we see most often with small business clients. Every business is different, so treat it as a guide, not a promise.

TimeframeWhat usually happens
First few weeksFixes to your Google Business Profile and website are made. Pages are crawled and indexed. Some quick wins can appear.
Around 3 monthsYou should see some good results, such as more profile views and calls, and early movement for service searches.
3 to 6 monthsRankings for more competitive service pages start to build, often slowly.
6 to 12 monthsThe best results usually arrive, as reviews, links and content add up and Google trusts your business.

Why Some Pages Rank in Days

Not everything takes months. We once had a blog post rank within two days of publishing. It covered a fast-moving topic in AI that people were searching for at the time and few others had written about properly. We researched it carefully, wrote it, and then asked Google to index it straight away using the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.

There’s a lesson in that, but it isn’t that every post will rank in two days. Fast results happen when you answer a question that people are searching for and few others have answered well. Google says that requesting indexing adds a page to its queue but doesn’t guarantee it will be indexed, and indexing usually takes about a day, sometimes a week or two. Requesting indexing helps Google find a page quickly. It doesn’t make the page rank.

Fast rankings come from answering a question few others have answered well, not from a trick.

Why Service Pages Take Longer

Your main service pages, such as “electrician in Horsham” or “accountant in Crawley”, are the searches every competitor in your area wants. Those businesses may have years of reviews, links and content behind them. In our experience, ranking competitive service pages often takes three months, and frequently longer.

Google’s own SEO Starter Guide says changes can take anywhere from a few hours to several months to show in search, and recommends waiting a few weeks before judging whether something has worked.

What Affects How Long It Takes

  • Competition in your area. A wedding photographer in a small town faces a very different market to a solicitor in central London.
  • Where you’re starting from. A business with an established website and plenty of reviews moves faster than one starting from scratch.
  • Your Google Business Profile. Fixing categories, details and verification problems can make a difference quickly.
  • Reviews. A steady flow of new reviews builds trust over time and can’t be rushed.
  • Content and links. Useful content and links from local websites build up gradually and compound over months.
  • How much work goes in. Local SEO isn’t a one-off job. Progress comes from steady, consistent effort.

Why Local SEO Is a Partnership

The fastest results we see come when the agency and the business work together. There are parts of local SEO that only you can do well. You’re the one who can ask customers for reviews, share photos of your latest jobs, and tell us the questions your customers ask every week. When a client builds up reviews and feeds us that knowledge, everything moves faster.

The businesses that see results soonest are the ones that treat local SEO as teamwork, not something done to them.

How Long Does It Take to Appear in AI Answers?

There’s no fixed timescale, but there is an order. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in search before it can appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so indexing comes first. After that, AI tools are more likely to recommend businesses they can find consistent, trusted information about, and that builds up over the same months as your reviews, content and links. The work that improves your rankings also builds your AI visibility, on a similar timescale. Our guide to how to appear in AI search explains more.

How to Tell If It’s Working Before the Enquiries Arrive

Rankings and enquiries take time, so look for early signs of progress:

  • more views, calls and direction requests in your Google Business Profile Performance report;
  • more searches finding your profile, including the search terms people used;
  • new pages appearing in Google and starting to receive impressions;
  • an increase in searches for your business name;
  • a growing number of reviews.

If you’re not seeing any of these after three months, it’s time to look at what’s being done and why.

Be Wary of Anyone Who Promises Fast Results

Google says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Anyone who guarantees first place on Google within weeks is either guessing or using tactics that break Google’s rules, such as fake reviews or keyword-stuffed business names. Those shortcuts can get your profile suspended, which costs far more time than doing it properly.
